I particularly enjoy photographing weddings at The Post Oak Hotel. As the only Texas Forbes Five-Star Hotel and Spa, it offers the service and surroundings expected of a true luxury hotel. Peachy Events did a wonderful job designing and leading this wedding, balancing refined style with an evening full of warmth, personality and energy.

A Post Oak Hotel wedding day
My assistant photographer and I began with the bride and groom in separate locations as they got ready at home. We worked quietly around everything already happening, looking for the emotion between the people closest to them rather than turning the morning into a prolonged photoshoot.
The couple were married at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in River Oaks. It was a beautiful Houston church ceremony, photographed with the same unobtrusive attention to emotion, family and tradition, before everyone made their way to The Post Oak Hotel.
A cocktail hour made personal
Cocktail hour at The Post Oak Hotel was absolutely beautifully designed, and alive with conversation and anticipation.
One of my favorite details was seeing the couple’s engagement photographs enlarged to an extraordinary scale and incorporated into the celebration. I had photographed their engagement session at Sabine Street Bridge and Buffalo Bayou Park, creating portraits connected to Houston. Here, those images became more than decoration; they celebrated the couple and connected one chapter of their story to the next.
Classic black-tie design (and stunning cake!) at The Post Oak Hotel
The reception combined black-tie formality with an elegant palette of white florals. Peachy Events created a setting that suited the scale and character of the hotel while keeping the couple firmly at its center.
The main wedding cake was a tall, four-tier design displayed beneath a pin spot, giving it a striking presence in the reception. The groom’s cake recreated the Houston Astrodome, an unmistakably local detail and a wonderful counterpoint to the formality surrounding it.
The hotel gives planners considerable flexibility: its Grand Ballroom offers 16,000 square feet of space, while the more intimate Post Oak Ballroom provides another option. Photographically, that scale calls for wide images that preserve the design and closer frames showing how guests experienced it. Both are necessary to tell the complete story.
Emotional speeches and genuine reactions
The speeches were emotional, funny and rich with the unscripted reactions I always hope to find at a wedding. There were big laughs, affectionate glances and moments when the room became completely still.
This is where a documentary approach to wedding photography becomes especially valuable. I am watching the speaker, the couple, their parents and the tables around the room, anticipating expressions that disappear almost as soon as they arrive. Years from now, it may be a parent’s expression or a friend caught mid-laugh that brings the speech back most vividly.
Orbit, The Greenway Band and an unforgettable dance floor
Adrian Michael and The Greenway Band kept the room moving, and then Orbit, the Houston Astros mascot, arrived to dance with the guests. It was unexpected, wonderfully chaotic and impossible not to enjoy. With an Astrodome cake in the room and Orbit on the dance floor, the celebration carried its Houston identity proudly.
A late-night delivery from Kolache Shoppe refueled everyone for more dancing before the band led guests out of the ballroom in a second-line exit.
These are the parts of a wedding when I want the photographs to move with the celebration: direct flash, layered frames, split-second expressions and a little artful chaos when the moment calls for it. The elegance of the room remains part of the story, but so does everyone who filled it.
