River Oaks Country Club Wedding Photography
River Oaks Country Club is one of Houston’s most distinctive settings for a design-led luxury wedding. The club’s dining room has a visual identity of its own, particularly its iconic green scenic wallpaper. For this celebration, the design worked with the room, while a storm-lit dinner and a packed dance floor gave the evening a character no mood board could manufacture.
I absolutely love photographing weddings at River Oaks Country Club. It gives couples something far more interesting than a blank ballroom, and offers a beautiful balance of Houston tradition, personal design and a genuinely great party. My approach here is documentary at heart, with modern, artful portraits and careful attention to everything special created for the day.
A River Oaks Country Club wedding day
The groom began the day with lunch alongside his friends and family in one of the club’s restaurants. Elsewhere, the bride got ready with her bridesmaids and her mom. It was a relaxed start, with plenty happening on both sides of the wedding before everyone left for the ceremony.
The couple were married at the Church of St. John the Divine, a beautiful Episcopal church further along River Oaks Boulevard, and after the ceremony, everyone returned to the country club and the celebration settled into its own world for the evening.
A reception designed for the room
The bride’s mother, who had danced with New York City Ballet, designed the entire wedding. That included custom furniture created specifically for the reception and designed to connect with the famous wallpaper in the club’s main dining room.
The scenic green walls became part of the design rather than simply its backdrop – white flowers, green textiles, patterned cushions, candlelight and varying levels of custom seating made the room feel layered and intimate. It did not look like a wedding that could have been installed in any available ballroom. It belonged at River Oaks Country Club.
This is where thoughtful wedding photography matters. The wide photographs preserve the scale of the room and its design, while the closer frames show how guests actually occupied it.
Dinner during a Houston storm
A storm moved in during dinner, darkening the windows and changing the atmosphere inside the room, and the rain brought an indescribable mood with it. Candlelight became more present, conversations felt closer and dinner became even more intimate.
It was one of those parts of a wedding that nobody could have planned, but which became central to the memory of the evening. I never want to photograph the atmosphere out of a moment like that. The point is to recognize the uniqueness and beauty of what is happening and preserve it.
A truly unforgettable dance floor
When it was time to dance, the bride changed from her ballet flats into pale blue cowboy boots. The Jordan Kahn Orchestra were exceptional as always, and the guests brought enough energy to meet them.
The dance floor photographs move with that energy: black-and-white frames, direct flash, split-second expressions of joy and a little artful chaos when the moment calls for it. There were people held high in the air, drinks flowing and no shortage of guests prepared to commit fully to the evening.
Instax and 35mm wedding photography
Alongside the digital photography, I photographed parts of this wedding on 35mm film and made Instax photographs (‘polaroids’) throughout the evening.
At the end of the night, I left the bride and groom with a stack of finished instant photographs, guests could hold them, pass them around and see past moments from the wedding while it was still happening. The couple took home their first physical photographs from the day before I packed away my cameras.
These one-of-one prints have become one of my favorite things to create at a wedding. They are small, imperfect and completely personal, giving the couple an immediate keepsake alongside the full digital gallery and film scans still to come.
